When I was in college, my roommates and I used to throw fairly large parties in our apartment. We had one of the largest rooms on our floor, so everyone tended to flock to our end of the hall regardless of whether or not we sent out invitations. One weekend in particular the whole campus was celebrating a football win, and our party's attendance was particularly high. After a night of drunken debauchery and several visits from the local police department, the party disbanded and we all passed out. The next morning was a disaster. I'd cleaned deso oil tanks in a previous job, and this task was a match to any clean-up I'd done professionally before. There were beer cans everywhere, pizza boxes under the couches, and random articles of clothing strewn about the kitchen. We needed more bleach and paper towels than the grocery had to clean up the mess. We broke down the jobs necessary to whip the place back into shape, and several hours and lots of sweat later, we pretty much had the place back to normal. We ended up taking close to ten black trash bags full of beer cans to the dumpsters out back! After that weekend we made sure to keep our party attendance to a more reasonable level. |

The biggest mess I've ever cleaned up came after a huge family gathering at Thanksgiving. My husband has seven brothers and sisters, all married with kids, and our house is a very average size home. We can seat about six people at our dining table, while everyone else sat on the couch, the floor, or outside in the backyard. The kitchen is very small and there wasn't an inch of counter space left after everyone brought their prepared dishes. I guess it wasn't until everyone left that evening that I realized the mess that was left behind. Sticky, red juice was dribbled on the tile floor of the kitchen, as well as crumbs, blobs of jello and pieces of turkey, stuffing and even a half-eaten roll. Every hard surface in every room had glasses and cups on them. Beer bottles, wine bottles and soda cans lined the kitchen counter for recycling, and the backyard was littered with bottles and cans. Plates, with half eaten food were lying around, and some had blown into the grass and bushes. It was hard to believe that people actually tidied up before they left, because it looked like a bomb had gone off. There were sticky fingerprints everywhere, including the wall, television remotes and the wood stair banister. My kids’ rooms had every toy scattered about the floor, and our carpet had the occasional unknown stain on it.
It was at that point I was thinking I was going to need to hire professionals with their various pressure washer accessories to sort this mess out!
Luckily, my husband picked up the backyard and gathered all the trash items from every room, while I loaded the dishwasher and ran it. It would take three dishwasher loads to finish the job. After we hauled out the sixth or seventh trash bag, vacuumed, wet mopped and wiped off walls and furniture, I was ready to drop dead. Hosting a gathering that size is something I never want to do again. |

Owning a dream home is an aspiration yearned by many an individual. However, when you buy a house no matter how perfect it might appear, there are bound to be certain flaws that cannot be overlooked. And while many people use the excuse that they are useless at DIY (to avoid making changes to their home), not all jobs require the skills of handling a bench saw.
Let me give you an example: for me it is the horrible painting on the walls of my master bedroom that irks me. Instead of hiring a professional to do the job, considering the option of doing it yourself will surely provide greater satisfaction. So if I had the necessary finances and time to manage my dream DIY job for my home it would surely be that of painting. Making a correct choice of the paint is essential to ensure that the dream DIY job is done smoothly. Also a few paint brushes and rollers will be needed. Different kinds of finish are available in paints these days. The satin finish has a rich and velvety appearance that adds value to the room. Odorless and eco-friendly paint is another popular kind of paint being chosen by many individuals planning to go for a dream DIY job of painting. |
